Thousands of people turned out here in the German capital, Berlin, to celebrate 30 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall—of course, one of the pivotal1 events that really led to the end of communism in 1989.

Now, Angela Merkel, who was, obviously, at many of the events that took place on this day, said that it was a solemn event that took place. She said, on the one hand, of course, the fall of the wall is something that continues to be celebrated in
Germany, and of course, in other places in Europe as well, but it also comes with the fact that at this point in time, the values that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and to the unity in Europe need to be defended more than ever before.

成千上萬人現身德國首都柏林這裡，慶祝柏林圍牆倒塌三十週年──當然了，這是導致共產黨（編按：指歐洲共產主義）在一九八九年走向終點的關鍵事件之一。

安格拉．梅克爾顯然出席了多場在這天舉辦的活動，她表示這是發生過的一起莊嚴事件。她說一方面，柏林圍牆的倒塌在德國當然是一件持續在慶祝的事，在歐洲其他地方自然也是如此，不過伴隨而來的事實是，當初致使柏林圍牆倒下和歐洲團結一心的價值，在此時比以往更須加以捍衛。
